Pub to Home Transformation by McDowell Building
At McDowell Building & Construction, we love to work on projects that combine the functionality of the present with the elegance of the past. One of our most rewarding restorations to date involved converting a 19th-century pub into a vibrant home full of character. In this blog, we’ll take you through the journey of this remarkable transformation and thoughtful details that brought this historic building back to life.
Honouring the Original Structure
When our clients came to us with this project, they wanted us to retain as much of the original building as possible. This was no small task, as the pub, dating back to the 1800s, came with its fair share of age-related structural challenges.
Many of the building’s original components were carefully disassembled, restored, and repurposed. Some standout features that made their way back into the home include:
- Fireplace mantels and hearths
- Skirtings, doors, and some architraves
- Original windows, locks, and door handles
A Contemporary Extension with Timeless Appeal
Working in collaboration with the team at 3070 Design Studio, we introduced a modern extension to the back of the property. This area was designed to feel open, airy, and connected to the outdoors, thanks to:
- Large steel-framed windows that bathe the interiors in natural light
- A carefully planned layout that flows seamlessly from the original structure
- Construction using Solitex Extasana wrap for better energy efficiency and airtight performance
Creating a Functional Outdoor Space
Working in collaboration with the team at 3070 Design Studio, we introduced a modern extension to the back of the property. This area was designed to feel open, airy, and connected to the outdoors, thanks to:

Overcoming Restoration Challenges
As with any heritage building, restoring this pub came with its fair share of hurdles. Much of the existing structure had to be stripped back to install insulation. Additionally, several structural issues required expert handling due to the building’s age.
Due to our careful preparation, use of premium materials, and dedication to perfection, the transformation was completed flawlessly.
