Project Panella Pool House by McDowell Building
In Moonee Ponds, the McDowell Building & Construction team delivered Project Panella, a sophisticated pool house designed to complement the client’s existing home. Completed in March 2024, this project turned a bare, unused area into a functional and elegant outdoor living space perfectly suited for the warmer months.
Matching the Home’s Existing Aesthetic
The client’s vision centred around seamlessly integrating a pool house that felt like a natural extension of their existing residence built six years earlier. Every design choice, from material selection to architectural detail, was guided by this goal. The design and documentation were handled by the same architect responsible for the main home, ensuring continuity of form and finish.
Two design iterations refined the balance between visual harmony and structural performance. The result is a poolside pavilion that merges functionality with craftsmanship, maintaining consistency in tone, texture, and proportion throughout.
Precision and Performance in Construction
The build presented technical challenges due to boundary proximity and the inclusion of a substantial steel beam, where every millimetre of measurement mattered. We managed this complexity with meticulous coordination and strong communication between contractors, ensuring compliance with all frame and structural inspections.
A standout feature of the project is the curved façade, a bespoke architectural element that adds movement and individuality to the structure. Marine-grade plywood was used extensively for the exterior joinery, selected for its weather resilience, durability, and ability to accommodate curved construction.
Comfort, Shade, and Year-Round Usability
Central to the design is an automatic retractable shade sail, allowing the space to adapt effortlessly to changing conditions. The area now functions as a luxurious retreat, providing shade, shelter, and convenience with integrated kitchen amenities.
Once an underutilised concrete area, the pool house has become a hub for relaxation and entertainment. The Panella family now enjoy a versatile outdoor living zone that not only enhances their lifestyle but significantly increases the property’s usability and appeal.
